There’s a quiet trick that every seasoned gardener learns. It’s not about the seeds or the soil or even the water. It’s what happens before the new growth ever shows up.

You rest the ground.

You don’t just stop planting … you let the soil do nothing. No input. No disturbance. You trust that, in stillness, something deeper is repairing itself.

That’s what I’ve been doing this week.

I’ve been fasting.

A 3-day fast-mimicking protocol using a special broth that doesn’t trigger digestion, so the internal systems can stay in healing mode. It’s not starvation. It’s restoration. A deliberate pause … not for punishment, but for repair.

And the result isn’t just a few lost pounds (though yes, that happens). It’s the unmistakable sense that something inside has been swept clean.

The clutter’s cleared. The noise turns down. And suddenly I can hear what I didn’t even know I’d been missing.

What fasting really offers — especially in midlife

In our busiest seasons, we tend to think that healing will come from doing more: more supplements, more movement, more tweaking.

But just like the garden soil, your body doesn’t always need more.

Sometimes it needs space.

Fasting invites autophagy … a kind of cellular housekeeping. Damaged cells get cleared out. Energy pathways reset. Hormones rebalance.

Your body starts solving problems it couldn’t get to before because it was too busy processing the last meal. Or the last argument. Or the last wave of stress hormones.

When we stop digesting, we finally start recovering.

And in midlife, when hormones are shifting and stress layers have compounded over years, this kind of rest isn’t optional. It’s essential.

Here’s what I used

My version of fasting isn’t extreme. I use a nutrient-dense soup that doesn’t spike insulin or disturb digestive rest. This allows the body to enter repair mode gently … no harsh drops in energy, no all-day hunger. Just calm, steady clearing.

It’s a beautiful way to listen in.

If this speaks to you…

Consider what “resting your soil” might look like. Maybe it’s not food-related yet. Maybe it’s emotional digestion. Mental input. A temporary pause from the push-push-push.

If you’re curious about fasting in a safe, natural, supportive way … or just craving a slower, steadier pace, this is one of the Ways and Plays options in my Human Energy System Reboot.

Your next step?

Let yourself pause.

And ask: What would I clear out if I trusted something better was ready to grow?
